Ofcourse, because someone who was democratically elected and subsequently resigned absent any scandals is just a 'kindly authoritarian'. You cant win, what does good leadership actually look like then? And if Ardern is authoritarian, what does that make Donald Trump, or, Augusto Pinochet, or, Margaret Thatcher? This issues with her gun controls is that they won't work. Just as the handgun ban in the UK hasn't done anything to reduce gun crime – prior to Dunblane almost all gun crime was criminals using illegal guns and since Dunblane almost all gun crime is down to criminals using illegal guns – she has just attacked law abiding gun owners, who were never much of a threat. In the UK, cars kill more people every week than lawfully owned guns kill in ten years, but we are constantly gaslight to fear law-abiding, vetted people owning guns. All of the government's data shows gun owners are less of a risk than any other group of people in the UK, but they are smeared and demonised. Ardern did the same in NZ and they are pushing back.

Most Americans have always thought of NZ as a place of great beauty, friendly folks and individual liberty. Madam Arden disabused us of that notion.
